Predictive coding and Alpha rhytm
Abstract
- Higher areas make hypotheses to explain lower areas activity
- A generative model turns hypothesis into predictions
- A lower areas compare predictions with inputs
- Residuals from lower areas are sent back to higher areas
- Repeat
Explanation
Intuition
- A white noise stimulus is unpredictable
- A strong input will cause a strong prediction
- The prediction will most likely be wrong (due to the noise nature)
- It will produce an error signal, aiming to correct in the opposite direction
- The correction will also be wrong, producing an opposite error signal, and so on
- The prediction and the error signals will oscillate, and so will the IRF (Impulse Response Function)
